New releases are up and online now at Primalrecords.com, headed
up a handful of exclusive promo material from our friends at Hochokai,
Amenti Music, Moulton Studios, and Swag UK. These releases, and
more, kickstart our latest hitlist. Here's a taste:
HIGHWAY ROBBERY PROJECT feat. REKHA "All Deities" (Original
and Wyatt Earp & DJ Foxx Mxs) Hochokai / WYATT EARP & DJ
FOXX "Simple Things" EP Hochokai (Promo) / MATTHEW MOFFRE
"Soul Colors" (Original and Wyatt Earp & DJ Foxx Mxs)
Hochokai (Promo) [House, Tech-house, Tribal] Holy cow. Not one,
not two, but three brand new releases from Wyatt Earp's fantastic
Hochokai label. Having cut their teeth with the well-respected Casa
Del Soul family (and hot on the heels of the massively popular "Android"
single), Wyatt Earp and DJ Foxx branch out with a series of new
releases--two of them here at Primalrecords.com on exclusive white
label promo only. Deep house devotees will no doubt find solace
with the Highway Robbery Project's "All Deities"--a deftly
executed warm and dubby vocal houser with a slightly jazzy feel.
Earp & Foxx's remix retains the depth of the original, but takes
it a bit tougher and techier for the Chicago house set. With "Simple
Things," the duo get downright dirty: There's a tough tribal
mix coated with analogue filth on one side, on the other, it's a
deeper San Francisco-flavored affair that positions the dirty bass
juxtaposed against textured flute and piano riffing--and it works.
Finally, newcomer Matthew Moffre presents "Soul Colors,"
a deep and dubby percussive track balanced around a cascade of lush
pads and jazzy keys. For the flip here, Earp & Foxx get back
into the studio for a dancefloor-ready mix that not only remixes
the original, but reinterprets it altogether--going so far as to
add an extra vocal track from Echo Cybele. Quality all around here,
but don't sleep on the promos. They are, as always, first come,
first serve.

JAY-J & KELVIN K "One Day" (Original & '92
Dub Mxs) Multitracked (Promo) [House] This one has been roadtested
by select SF jocks for close to a year now, and though you'll still
have to wait a while for its official release, we've got a limited
amount of exclusive white label promos for those of you with the
quickest draw of the mouse. What you'll find here is undisputed
vintage Moulton Studios material: Jay-J and former Moulton man Kelvin
K team up for a tough, bass-driven anthem that samples civil rights
pioneer Adam Clayton Powell for a track that will most likely inspire
just as much thought as it does dancefloor movement. Of the two
mixes here, my pick goes to the '92 Dub Mix--an effective revisit
to the ghost of San Francisco past that employs a dose of breakbeat,
a dash of acid, and a keenly current production sensibility. Awesome.

YANN FONTAINE "My Love Will Surround" (Original, Lance
Desardi, and The Kick Inside Mxs) Amenti Music (Promo) It's
another exclusive, and once again, this one is extremely limited.
Yann Fontaine has made his name as a producer for respected labels
like Ovum, F-Comm, and Low Pressings; here, he serves up a low-end
tribal houser with a deep house mentality. Fellow Parisians The
Kick Inside, best known for their work with Brique Rouge, keep the
percussive bent, but follow a deeper route that bleeds atmosphere.
Still, it's Lance Desardi's techy synth stabs and four-to-the-floor
fervor that is making waves with Mark Farina and DJ Heather, and
it's not much of a brain exercise to figure out why. Act fast.

LO-MOTION "Field Day" EP Drop Music [House, Tech-house]
This is the crispest production I've heard all month. The Inland
Knights-owned Drop Music label unearth Lo-Motion for this techy
sample-driven 2-tracker. "Heartbraker" goes into a deep,
but tough bass-heavy direction that recalls Miguel Migs finer moments,
while "Do You Know?" keeps the blueprint intact but cuts
up the samples for a more frenzied dancefloor romp.

DANNY SULLIVAN & KEMIST "Snake Charmer" Pt. 1 (Original
& Hand Polished Mxs) Hooj Choons / DANNY SULLIVAN & KEMIST
"Snake Charmer" Pt. 2 (Lee Coombs & Grant Dell's Uhuru
Beats Rmxs) Hooj Choons [House, Progressive, Tech-house] New
Yorkers Danny Sullivan and Eric Holterhoff get quite the jump-start
on their careers with "Snakecharmer," their first collaboration
for UK trailblazers Hooj Choons. As always, the label puts out two
plates of mixes and this is no exception. Plate 1 delivers the original
mix, a brash, tribal progressive mix of the highest caliber that
derives its name from a Middle Eastern riff in the break. Canadian
broken beat outfit Hand Polished come in straight from their latest
EP for Guidance with a quality downbeat house mix for the flip.
Meanwhile, Disc 2 dishes out a remix from breakbeat hero Lee Coombes
before landing out the standout remix from Grant Dell (of Tribalation
fame) and his Uhuru Beats project. You know the score here: Classy
tribal
tech-house that is doing the business with Terry Francis, Lee Burridge,
and Mazi.

STEVE LAWLER "Andante" Pt. 1 (Original & Low End
Specialists Mxs) Bedrock / STEVE LAWLER "Andante" Pt.
2 (Original Dub & Scumfrog Mxs) Bedrock [Progressive, Tribal]
I am not even kidding. This is the best track I've listened
to all week. UK DJ Steve Lawler, after several close attempts, finally
gets his head around making an authentic New York tribal cut. This
is the kind of track that would get play from the 8-Ball Records
set, the Sound Factory set, and of course, the Tenaglia set. The
progressive aspect is subtle here; what really resonates are the
drums, the bass line, and the rhythm. Both the original and the
dub share the same track-map, although the original carries more
of the vocal samples. Meanwhile, on the remix tip, New York City's
Low End Specialists give the original a dark and techy interpretation,
while recent celebrity remixer The Scumfrog keeps the tribal house
vibe going. Still, it's always nice to see an original tune not
finding itself outshined by one of its remixes. Here, Lawler can
be relieved to find that this is not the case.

MIKE MONDAY "T.F.D.T." Whoop! [Progressive, Tech-house]
I have to give it up to Mike Monday. After finding himself stalemated
as a progressive house producer, the last couple of years have found
him experimenting with new sounds and old ideas revamped, and surprisingly,
he's found much success both creatively and otherwise. With "T.F.D.T.",
Monday spells out his intentions--the acronym stands for "Technofied
Funked Up Disco Ting." And that's what your looking at here:
The progressive production techniques are intact, but the aesthetic
revolves around a genuine tech-house value system. The crossover
is complete.
