10 April 2003

It's time for this week's second update, up now at Primalrecords.com. Loads of new titles have been added to the database from all genres, and of course, we've got another handful of exclusive promo music to go alongside this week's essential new releases. Here's a taste:

LANCE DESARDI "The Urban Bourbon" EP Muzique Boutique (Promo) [House, Tech-house] One-half of Undercover Agency, Lance Desardi strikes out on his own with a new EP for label-to-watch Muzique Boutique. There are two original cuts here--"Computer People" and "I've Been There"--the latter of which rocked several parties at Winter Music Conference with support from Mark Farina and DJ Sneak. Can't place it? Once you hear the infectious female chant of "Chicago" it will all come back to you. On the remix tip are label principals John Larner and Slater Hogan, coming fresh off their latest promo on Flygaric Tracks, with a pair of equally stunning mixes--one deeper, the other funkier. No proper house DJ will leave this one out of their crate.

DJ SPUN "Inside Tips For Better Sex" EP Filthy Dog (Promo) [House] The Smartbeat Crew have been an essential part of the San Francisco house scene for some time now, whether it's rocking the party on an eclectic leftfield and funky house tip in the main rooms or rocking full-on dub and reggae sets in the lounge. Here, DJ Spun breaks off the first release for the collective's Filthy Dog imprint, and this EP is true to the game. Fans of Chicken Lips and Metro Area will dig the '80s house motif of "Motion" and "Natural Supplements," while modern deep house folks will go straight to "Positions"--a bass-heavy dubiscussive jam with sexy female vocals and a dirty strut.

HAKAN LIDBO "The Killer" EP Muzique Boutique (Promo) [House, Tech-house] The one-sheet's got it right when it says that Hakan Lidbo has "a discography longer than most people's record collections." As of late, however, Lidbo's been relatively quiet, leading us to believe that the focus is on quality over quantity these days. This ultra-limited promo has two original cuts and a remix from label bods John Larner and Slater Hogan, all of which carry the funk in the strictest sense of the term--think Bootsy meets Moroder. Lidbo's "Pajama Party" is my fave of the three, coming off like Basement Jaxx at a German techno party. As always, unique and innovative house music from Camp Hakan.

UNKNOWN (Hall & Oates, Talking Heads, Santana) "The Throwback EP" White Label [House] No need to hype this one up. Talk on the internet has been rampant about a certain Kaskade mix of Talking Heads' "Naive Melody" tearing up the clubs nationwide--and here it is. This is the kind of record I can shut up about. It'll sell itself.

ALAN BARRATT "Lush / Do It / Subtle" White Label [House, Tribal] From the same mysterious "white label" team that brought you Tony Hewitt and Grant Dell's first collaboration, as well as LHK & Alex Moran's currently hot "Chord Memory," comes a new 3-tracker from Paris-via-UK DJ/producer Alan Barratt. Somewhere between his work for Red Ant and Royal Drums, this EP is house music with a percussive and techy edge--and a somewhat Latin flavor to boot. "Subtle," ironically, steals the show here with it's tough tribal rhythms underneath a tight b-line and a reggae/dub flavor that recalls the H-Foundation sound of old. Solid.

KOKEE "THE NOSE" ANU & KORIN LADKE "Green Tacos / Taco Supreme / Taco Heaven" Igloo [House] The Igloo Crew is back at it; this time taking on '80s freakshow Taco. Remember "Putting On The Ritz"? You know, the guy who kind of looked like a mime and thought he was Fred Astaire? This Chicago, umm, I mean, Alaskan remake team take on the aforementioned "Ritz" as well as a few other Taco faves. Sounds strangely enough like Greenskeepers or something, but with that Anchorage house vibe. You know the score.

And that is nowhere near all we've got. There's a new LP from Swag. A 2-part remix package from Blakkat, featuring one of the hottest vocal house cuts in recent memory remixed by Onionz. Toca, Crazy Penis, and Lil Devious. The long-awaited rebirth of Mazi's Gourmet label with David Duriez. A reissue of Chris Nazuka & Derrick Carter's Experience EP for Classic. Patrick Turner & Ben Camp's High Fashion Audio EP currently making waves with David Duriez, Lee Burridge, and lots more. And the latest from Coco Machete featuring new music from Lance "Landshark" Desardi.

New remix and production work is also in from JT Donaldson, Dave From Dallas, Cass, Groove Armada, Tony Thomas, Circulation, Gene Farris & Stacy Kidd, Jordan Fields, Martin Venetjoki, Luomo, Wally Lopez & Cesar Del Rio, Justin Robertson (with Phil Kieran on the remix), Metrik, Mike Monday, and Hellpass (taking on Jean-Michel Jarre on limited white label), plus much more.

New label output from Fair Park, Deep Dish's new Yo label, Sabotage, Dorigen, Shaboom, Kompakt, Simple Soul, Camouflage, Aroma, Presslab, Weekend, Treibstoff, Whoop, and Substatic is also in.

And don't forget the restocks. Full-release copies of the uber-hot Doubledown Sampler Vol. 2 are back in (Thomas Sahs' contribution is still the head-turner 'round these parts), as is Jay Tripwire's newie for Nightshift, "Then & Now." We've also added some choice restock titles from Tango back into the fold, as well as a full restock from local label favorites Jah Love Recordings. Finally, those limited white label mixes of the Frankie Smith classic "Double Dutch Bus" (which inspired Missy Elliot's "Gossip Folks," also remixed here) are back in full. This might be the last time you ever see these, so if you want it, don't sleep.

Have a great weekend. Be good.
