This week's second update is up and online now at Primalrecords.com,
with over 50 brand new titles added to our House, Progressive, Tech-house,
Breaks, and Techno catalogs. Lots of long-awaited stuff is in this
week, as is a fistful of illicit white label mixes tackling the
likes of Angie Stone, Kenny Latimore, The Clash (remixed by Joeski),
Thompson Twins, and Arrested Development. Check it out:
H-FOUNDATION "Tonight" Pt. 1 (Fred Everything and H-Foundation Rmxs) / Pt. 2 (King Britt and DJ Dozia Rmxs) Soma [House, Tech-house] The hands-down standout track from H-Foundation's Environments LP gets the remix treatment over two discs, and this just might be the remix package of the year. On one hand, you've got King Britt handing in a seductive deep house mix that ranks with his best work everversatile enough for an atmospheric set or a dancefloor with depth. And DJ Dozia's Hit Mix is just thata tougher deep house number with a New York vibe, recalling that classic Def Mix sound. Superb. On the other hand, Fred Everything becomes a deconstructionist, drawing from a techier, funkier palette and reveling in the essential elements: bottom-heavy groove, manipulated vocals, and rapturous FX play. This is large. And as for H-Foundation? Well, did you ever feel the original mix was perfect but way too short? I sure did. Here, Halo & Hipp-E heed my request for a trippy extended remix that is simply on fire. Both discs are likely to become future classics and I refuse to pick just one.

ANNIE "I Will Get On" (Joshua Rmxs) Loaded [House,
Tech-house] Loaded bring back Annie, of "The Greatest Hit"
fame, for this excellent remix disc from San Francisco's own Joshua
(aka Iz). Two mixes here, a vocal and a dub, both of which do the
trick nicely. A shifty groove with a slightly Latin rhythm anchors
the track, while Joshua's trademark synthplay underscores a playful
Chicago-esque bass line. I'm presently favoring the vocal mix, but
I've got a feeling the Dub will be getting the most long-term airplay
around town. Either way, you won't go wrong.

HAMMANN & KADAN "Guten Tag" EP Freude-am-Tanzen [House, Tech-house, Techno] I'm not gonna lie here. When I'm writing these newsletters, I do tend to stray away from writing about the techier side of techno because, quite honestly, I'm just not that clued up on it. Still, every now and then, a techno-identified label will release something that leans on the housier side of techno and my ears will be perked. This is the case here: Though I originally listened to this record because of its Wighnomy Brothers remix, I'm sold on it by "Musik," its fantastic A-side. If you've been feeling the last Phonique record on Seasons, the last few Poker Flat releases, or the latest Brett Johnson LP, give this one a spin: "Musik" is a spastic tech-houser with a plentiful dose of subby funk and a twisted vocoded melodic hook that will effectively reel in the audience and give your set an edge of originality. Wicked.

CIRCULATION "Colours Two" LP 2x12" Circulation [House, Tech-house, Progressive] I know I was already singing the praises of Circulation a few weeks ago after their "Tangerine" record came out, but hey, I am supposed to just shut up when they release their second full-length album? Like "Tangerine," Colours Two is a triumphant return-to-form for the Circulation set that succeeds as both a home listening experience and a dancefloor bomb: "Terracotta"'s ambient wash is absolutely blissful. "Chocolate" is the best cut Tom Middleton never made. "Neutral" is a proper deep tech-house record with a distinct UK edge. "Neon" savors and improves on the ethereal aesthetic of progressive's mid-'90s pioneers. Need I go on? Kudos to another testament toward universal house music.
