This week's first update is online now at Primalrecords.com, and these days we're not only dropping exclusive vinyl (of which we've got another handful this week), but we're honored to have a pair of exclusive mix CDs dropped off by the legendary Doc Martin himself! In addition to restocking the first release on his new Sublevel imprint (available in limited quantities now), we're pleased to present Doc's two latest mix CDs--and unlike his latest mix for the Fabric camp, you will not find these discs in any store! One CD was recorded live on New Year's Eve; the other, is a broad showcase of Doc's signature versatility--deep house, techno, classics, and quality tribal grooves are all represented here. If you already know and love him, you know what to expect. And once again, these CDs are exclusive to Primal Records.

Lots more to talk about on the vinyl front. Here's a sneak peek:

KASKADE "It's You, It's Me" (Marques Wyatt and Jason Hodges Rmxs) / "Meditation To The Groove" (Johnny Fiasco Rmx) OM Records [House, Tech-house] Oh, boy, did I love Kaskade's "It's You, It's Me." We're talking Top 3 tracks of the year,a nd definitely my favorite vocal track of the year so far. So God bless the folks at OM for issuing this class remix package and giving me something else to froth over. Marques Wyatt certainly comes through with a deep and jazzy mix that adds warmth to the original in a different and distinct way, and Johnny Fiasco takes a different track, "Meditation To The Groove," into a deep tribal space, but this EP's star moment belongs to relative newcomer Jason Hodges. In Hodges' hands, "It's You, It's Me" becomes a cut-up Chicago jack track with bass that cuts and a subtle acid house feel that recalls his fantastic EP for Oomph earlier this year. I didn't really think OM could improve on Kaskade's strong start, but this record makes good on the promise.

UNKNOWN (JILL SCOTT) "Gimmie" (Harry Knuckles Rmxs) White Label [House] From the same folks who brought you the wildly popular Slum Village white label mixes a couple of months back comes the latest house music transformation--Harry Knuckles vs. Jill Scott. This version of "Gimmie" comes from her live album, and this remix does the business with a stripped down and truly effective bass-n-drums backing track for Ms. Scott's powerful vocal performance. The flip strips things down even further for a full on beats mix, but in this case, there will be little need for a dub: Drop this original in rooms big and small and you will get the same awe-inspiring
effect.

CHICKEN LIPS "Re-echoed Vol. 3: Eggy's Pause Button" (Original, Sieg Uber Die Sonne, and Duncan Gray Mxs) Kingsize [House, Tech-house] Retro-modern wunderkinds Chicken Lips return with the latest installment of their remix series and this one is perhaps the first to really illustrate their outside-the-box mentality. "Eggy's Pause Button" is classic Chicken Lips, with its loose and live drum sequencing, wobbly bass tone, and '80s synth-modulation--fantastic in and of itself--but this record finds its salvation with the up-and-coming Sieg Uber Die Sonne and Duncan Gray handing in a pair of strong remixes for the record's B-side. Of the two, Sieg Uber
Die Sonne treats me right with a tight and punchy tech-house groover, perfect for those darker late night moments, while Duncan Gray (of Mighty Atom fame) takes the dubby route with a bass-driven percussive mix that looks back on the '80s with homage--not cheap nostalgia.

VERNELL DE LONG "People Get Up" (Original and Jamie Thinnes & Lance Desardi Mxs) Active Pass [House] The second release for Vancouver's Active Pass label proves that proper, soulful deep house still has what it takes to rock a dancefloor. Vernell de Long's original mix has all the elements of depth--lush atmspherics, dynamic low-end disposition, soothing vocals--but packs quite the soundsystem punch. Who better to give it the relick than Seasons mainman Jamie Thinnes and the ever-present Lance Sesardi? Their mix takes things slightly deeper with a host of new key stabs, dubbed-out vocal play, and a rolling b-line with real funk power. Classy stuff here.
