22 April 2003

This week's first update is online now at Primalrecords.com, once again featuring new titles in our House, Tech-house, Progressive, Techno, and Breaks catalogs. We've also got another batch of exclusive pre-release white labels from our friends at Warbled Music and Espionage--two up-and-coming labels to watch, no doubt--and hot restocks from the Tango/Detour camp, among others. Here's the shortlist:

MAZI & SPETTRO "Wrong" (2 Mixes) Espionage (Promo) [House, Tech-house] Quite the busy producer these days, Mazi takes some time out for a first-time collaboration with current Big Chief favorite Eddie Spettro for the debut release on Warbled Music sister label Espionage Recordings. Already licensed to DJ Heather's upcoming mix CD for Nordic Trax, "Wrong" is a tracky tech-house floor-filler with true Chi-town grit. The wobbly, but captivating bassline and tweaked found sounds take both mixes pretty damn far, but the deeper B-side mix is currently gaining my favor with it's subtle percussion, analog warmth, and vintage Seasons-styled aesthetic. Essential.

PANIC "Dublin Huffers / Space Case Boogie" Warbled Music (Promo) [House, Tribal, Tech-house] We had a bit of a surprise hit earlier this year when up-and-coming San Diego producer Panic came out the gate with a fantastic release for the DMT3 label. Now, he's back with exclusive pre-release copies of his latest for Warbled Music--his very own label to boot. "Space Case Boogie" is a case of deep mind-freaking business for the 4AM-and-later set, but my money is on "Dublin Huffers"--a dark and dubby tribal house cut with rapturous FX and a hypnotic b-line for the floor. Toss in a totally effective tribal breakbeat climax and this, my friends, is the complete package.

TONY THOMAS "Night Train / Stroller" Warbled Music (Promo) [House, Tribal, Tech-house] My good friend Bill Patrick, a resident at New York City's premier ARC nightclub, came back from Miami's Winter Music Conference beaming about this one. When I asked him what was the best record he came back with this year, he didn't hesitate: "Tony Thomas on Warbled Music." About a month later, and he we are, with exclusive pre-release copies of this release. And wow. Bill wasn't kidding. He was personally all over the EP's title track for it's warm and dubby gallop, underlined by a vocal sampled from a certain colorful pop diva, but my bet is with "Stroller"--a funky sax-tinged houser for fans of Dizzy or Johnny Fiasco. Quality.

JAY TRIPWIRE "The Trailer Park" EP Aztlan Music [House, Tribal, Tech-house] As "Jay Tripwire" goes into temporary hiding to make way for his newest alias as Mr. Barcode (more on that later!), Aztlan picks up the ball with some of his last music for a while. You can't help but love Jay for his creative song titles--this EP alone features "Huffing Glue Behind The Shed" and "The Sound Of Marrying Your Cousin"--but what we truly love him for is his consistent excellence in house music. This record is no exception: Besides "Huffing" and "Cousin," check out "Propane Dreams"--a chunky tribal workout that ranks among his best.

ROLAND KLINKENBERG "Don't Stop / Monkey Business" Polylux [House, Tech-house] Best known for his work in the Dutch progressive scene alongside Sander Kleinenberg and Lucien Foort, Roland Klinkenberg steps out of the box and creates a truly wicked template for funky tech-house that might escape his established fanbase. Are you feeling the recent output on 20/20 Vision? Check out "Don't Stop" a tough and jacky tech-house cut with a Chicken Lips-esque disco-fried edge. Like your house techy and minimal? "Monkey Business" will do the trick, carrying itself like it came from a San Diego nightclub more than a studio in Holland. Throw away your preconceptions on this one. Roland Klinkenberg is a new man.

ROACH MOTEL "Wild Luv" (Original & Tom Stephan Re-edit) Junior [House, Tribal, Progressive] Junior Boys Own is back with a series of classic reissues and re-edits, so rejoice! The first in the series is one of my personal favorites from Pete Heller and Terry Farley's classic Roach Motel incarnation. "Wild Luv" is a classic, simple and plain, and here, we get the original mix tied in with an updated edit from Superchumbo's Tom Stephan, who treats his version with the respect and care of someone who was so obviously there. If you are even a remote fan of early London house music--or early '90s New York house, for that matter--you need this.

Also new this week is remix and production work from Sidechained, Blakkat (mixed by progressive pioneers Evolution and downtempo heroes Rae & Christian), Wally Lopez, and Starecase, among others.

And in the restock sector, check out limited restocks from Tango (including Chris Lum's Bigger Tool EP and Halo & Tony's Ethnic Souls project), Detour (new releases from Hipp-E and Blakkat back in!), and some found copies of an early Primal release that is totally out of print! If you missed Dano's classic remixes of Mephisto Odyssey's "Reach," don't sleep.

A big thanks to everyone who came out for Primal Records Ten-Year Anniversary party last weekend! Highlights and photos will be coming soon to the website, so keep an eye open for that.

Thanks again for all, and be good!
