22 July 2003

To start this week, we just wanted to warn you: New releases from the Primal family are coming this way on exclusive white label, and both of them are hot enough to warrant some advanced warning. First up comes the latest release for our PR2 Recordings imprint: The artist's name is Mr. Barcode. And he claims to be a machine. In between breaking codes and hacking systems, Mr. Barcode makes records. And Binary Is The Language Of Love is the 3-track EP he ever so kindly made for us. What to expect? Perhaps one of the most twisted and distinctive records you'll hear all year--funky, techy, and utterly disgusting bass. (I played it off CDR one night and I swear the entire crowd stopped dancing for a second before going absolutely mental.) And like all good rock stars (see 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule, DMX vs. Ja Rule, and umm... Eminem vs. Ja Rule), Mr. Barcode's really got it in for Jay Tripwire. Watch your back, Jay!

Also something to look forward to: Primal family member Hector Moralez, of Fries & Bridges fame, is christening his brand new imprint this month. The label is called Minority Music and his first release is, appropriately enough, an astonishing 2-tracker from his Parisian production partner (and proud new daddy) Phil Weeks. We've all been battering the CDR for the past month; white labels for both releases should be available at Primalrecords.com within the next couple of weeks.

As for this week, check it:

V/A (HIPP-E & TONY HEWITT) "Tango Recordings: Past & Present" CD Tango [House, Tribal, Tech-house] Nightshift co-owners Hipp-E and Tony Hewitt team up for the first CD release on house music powerhouse Tango Recordings and just in time for summer, too. Blast this one out of your car speakers: Flawlessly mixed and expertly programmed, Past & Present is a label mission statement that reflects the earliest Tango classics (the "Three To Tango" EP's "Primitive" is a highlight for sure) while planting its feet firmly in the sound of now. Solomonic Sound, Joeski, Chris Lum, Halo, Onionz, Master D, Jay-J, and Tony and Blakkat's Lewis Twins project all make their appearance, but this CD is one of those rare mixed comps where the whole is actually greater than its sum parts. Very reasonably priced, too!

GRANT DELL & BOB DE ROSA "Letting Go / Hand Of Thee" Totem Music [House, Tribal, Tech-house] Leaf's Totem Music sister label hits the spot this week with the latest from Grant Dell & Bob De Rosa, two names that have certainly made their mark on 21st century UK house. "Letting Go" is a hands-in-the-air deep houser with a techy edge, raising the energy level with a fat rolling bassline and an excellent vocal sample that veers itself into feel-good territory, while "Hand Of Thee" follows in the same dark and dubby mode as Grant Dell's latest release for Worship--low-slung b-lines, tape echo twiddling, and vintage sampling choices round it out with staggering effectiveness.

Also new this week is remix and production work from Smitty & Eric Davenport, RC Groove (remixed by Audio Soul Project), Spettro (remixed by Toka), Panic, Rick Garcia, and full release copies of Phil Weeks' latest for Detour, dutifully remixed by our personal faves, Swirl People, among others.

And check back Thursday for a nice surprise. Let's just say Christmas is coming early.

Thank you all again and again for all your support! Be good.
