New records are up and online now at Primalrecords.com, with over
70 new titles in House, Tech-house, Techno, and Breaks, as well
as a notable update to our Progressive catalog. Loads of new releases
coming in on that front, including new titles from Bedrock, Sumsonic,
Deep, Plastica, and Source Of Gravity to name a few. Check it out.
In the meantime, here's the hitlist:
OUTTA LIMITS "Mission Control" (Ricky Montanari &
Davide Ruberto Rmxs) Azuli [House, Tech-house] This one has
been turning heads during recent sets from Doc Martin and Tony Hewitt,
and with good reason: Originally a Ralph Falcon classic from 1990,
Italian producers and NRK stable-mates Ricky Montanari and Davide
Ruberto give this track a massive update that combines tough drum
sequencing underneath a bed of tweaked-out frequency riffing--think
Audio Soul Project versus Brett Johnson. Currently a frontrunner
for tune of the summer, it's my essential pick of the week.

DJ Q "Shootin' Hoops / Just One Hour (Original & Remix"
Glasgow Underground [House] You guys blew through his latest
EP for Doubledown when it came through on white label last month,
now, here's something new for you to chew on. It's a DJ Q revival,
and this time, he's back on his native Glasgow Underground label
for a solid 3-tracker of quality deep and dubby house music. "Shootin'
Hoops" is a deft application of deep house atmosphere under
a funky house mindset, while "Just One Hour"--here in
two mixes--seems to be getting a workout over the store PA this
week with it's raw Chicago attitude and funky San Francisco spirit.
The man is on a roll.

DANO "10 Feet Of Trouble" EP Hochos [House, Tech-house]
/ 6400 CREW "Brothers Hand" (Original, Dano, and The Path
Rmxs) Low Pressings [House, Tribal, Tech-house] Local Red Melon
impresario Dano has been somewhat quiet on the production front,
but this week he makes his comeback with not one, but two new releases.
The first, an EP for Honchos, showcases some of my favorite Dano
work to date. The A-side, " The Way You Want," is a funky
tech-house groover that has both depth and jack potential; a cut-up
female vocal adds a vintage edge reminiscent of the classic acid
house aesthetic of the early '90s. On the flip, Dano gets techy
with "Time" and downright acidic on "My Dusty 303"--either
of which is highly playable. Fantastic.
His second appearance on the hitlist comes courtesy of a classic
6400 Crew collaboration featuring Dano, Tony, Onionz, and Master
D, here repressed and reissued with remixes courtesy of Clive Henry's
Low Pressings imprint. Terry Farley and Chris Bangs' collaboration
as The Path gives the original mix a harder UK edge in both vocal
and dub formats, while Dano gives the original a dubby interpretation,
replete with a tight low-end rhythm and a slew of effective studio
swoosh. The Original Mix rounds out the package, and, well, what
can I say? If you never got it the first time around, this track
is worth the price of the record alone.

H-FOUNDATION "Hear Dis Sound" (DJ Buck Rmx) Siesta
[House, Tribal, Tech-house] I remember the first time I heard
"Hear Dis Sound"--not in a club, but in a record store
where I bought it on the spot. Here, Siesta issues up a brand new
remix courtesy of the always on-point DJ Buck, who fails to disappoint.
Wish the original mix was something you could play at any time of
the night? Follow the b-line on this one. Incredible stuff.

SPETTRO "Confusion" (Original, Demarkus Lewis, and
Chuck Diesel & Olivier Desmet Mxs) Amenti Music [House, Tribal,
Tech-house] Texan DJ Spettro returns with his latest release,
this time for the fantastic local Amenti Music label. Nothing to
worry about here: If you liked Spettro's recent output for Big Chief,
you'll most likely find the big room blast of "Confusion"
and its dubby-and-dirty demeanor wholly satisfying as well. The
deep heads will no doubt find beauty in Demarkus Lewis's blissful
and jazzy re-rub, while label boss Olivier Desmet gets in the studio
with Chuck Diesel, taking full advantage of the Original's horn
flirtation for a full-on pumping SF house rub that still keeps it
deep. An all-around solid package.

FREEFORM FIVE "Break Me" (Derrick L. Carter and Jackson
Rmxs) Classic [House, Tech-house, Breaks] No, it's not new.
But I can't help but be excited to say that Classic has reissued
this gem from a few years back for everyone who missed it the first
time around. Derrick's mix is one of his fiercest ever, and Jackson's
flipside mix takes the original into a housey breaks groove that
just doesn't pop up on many records anymore these days. Rediscover
this.

GO! DIMAGGIO "Memories Of A Soft Landing" (Original
& Len Lewis Mxs) Communicato [House, Tech-house] A record-buying
week just isn't a record-buying week without at least one London
tech-house must-have. This week, it's Go! Dimaggio's latest on Communicato.
Though Poodle faithful Len Lewis throws down an exceptional minimal
dub houser on the remix, it's the original mix that's creating a
stir around here: Bass-loving funky house finds a home with freaky
techno FX and key stabs to create a moving dancefloor track for
the peak hours of the evening.

GRANT DELL & DANIEL POLI "Rogue Juniors" EP Household
[House, Tribal, Tech-house] Yes! It's finally out on full release!
If you missed my review, check the archives. It's still wicked.

PRINCE QUICK MIX vs. STEPHANE K "Insane Poem" Magnetik
[Progressive, Tribal] It's been hammered off CDR by just about
everyone--starting with Mr. Danny Tenaglia--and now it's available
on full release. John Creamer-collaborator Stephane K steps out
with Yoshitoshi loyalist PQM for a tribal progressive houser done
right. Quick and K's Mix (as opposed to K and Quick's Mix) gets
my vote here for its proper New York City vibe--slow and brooding,
twisted and hypnotic, dark and lovely.

ROYAL KINKS "All Night / Yesterday's Parties" Method
[Progressive] The A-side is good, and if you're a fan of the
Method/Baroque sound, you'll love it. But allow me to wax kindly
over this record's buried treasure. "Yesterday's Parties,"
found on the B-side of this 2-track EP, is a fantastic example of
melodic progressive house done right: Far from minimal, the Royal
Kinks take the synths out for a classy prog cut with house feeling
that brings to mind early Way Out West, P.O.B., or James Holden--or
early mornings at Twilo for that matter. Quality.

Also new this week is remix and production work from Johnny Fiasco,
Koma & Bones, Ils, Mr. Scruff (and a limited Ashley Beedle remix!),
Paul Rogers & Pete Bones, DJ Icey, Perc, Matt Busch & Aphasia
(featuring a Chab remix), Elite Force, Powder Productions, Ben Camp,
Bah Samba (with DJ Spinna mixes), Funky Transport, Spencer Gray
(with Ananda Project on the mix), Steve Bug, John Ciafone, DJ Linus,
and Chris Lum, among others.
New label output from Distinctive Breaks, Room, Poker Flat, Loveslap,
Plastica, Bedrock, Estereo, Anonymous, Exun, Junior, Select, Perlon,
Sumsonic, Mechanism, En:Vision, Sabotage, 3 Beat, Svek, Silver Network,
and Lotus Music, and many others, is also in.
That's it for now. Thanks again for all your support!
Until next week, be good.
