This week's second update is online now at Primalrecords.com, and this time we've got over 60 new titles to add to our House, Tech-house, Progressive, Techno, and Breaks catalogs. Here are only a few of the titles you won't want to be without this summer:
J-ROD "Natasha Lyonne" (Original and Olivier Desmet & Chuck Diesel Mxs) Square Room [House, Tech-house] New York's Square Room imprint returns with their strongest release yet. Kansas City producer J-Rod made a name for himself last year with his partner Pat Nice and a pair of absolutely devastating records for Safe In Sound and Roam. On his solo debut, J-Rod gives us more of that trademark jacked-up tech-house that endeared me to him so much in the first place--playful, funky, and utterly memorable. On the flip, Olivier Desmet and Chuck Diesel get busy with a proper house rub that should satiate the Moulton heads; its tough kick and subby bass dominate, but a slight disco edge keeps it fun on the floor. Solid.

HALO "When House Was" EP Bluem [House, Tech-house] Long before I was an East Bay acolyte, I lived in Chicago and breathed in the city's vibrant house music culture--working for Gramaphone Records, watching Derrick Carter play for hours on end, handing Ron Carroll records from the store booth. Before moving out to San Diego, Brian "Halo" Varga was a Chicago boy himself, and apparently, our lives found similar meaning. This 3-track EP is an ode to the Prescription Records deepness and the Cajual / Relief tech aesthetic. The track names are filled with meaning: "Lakeshore Drive" is one of the city's greatest assets, and of course, there's the ode to "G Phone," the record store that supplied everyone's vinyl fix. Wrap it all up in Halo's inimitable production style and you've got one hell of a record.

FLOWCHART "Broken & Blue" (Original & Rob Paine Mxs) Warmth [House, Tech-house] New York City's Warmth Records label goes from strength to strength with their second release from Philadelphia's Flowchart. The original mix is a nice and deep tech-houser with an atmospheric edge, but Solomonic Sound's Rob Paine steals the show here with an upbeat tribal and techy dub mix that is sure to become this summer's secret weapon. Check the chest-heaving b-line, subtle percussive bent, and cleverly rhythmic vocal cut-up. Dare I say it's his strongest studio outing since "Children Of Israel" rocked our worlds last year? Could be.

PHAEDRA "Holy Roller" (Original & DJ Buck Mxs) Straylight [House, Tribal, Tech-house] This one's been floating around on white label for some time now, causing a stir with trainspotters both online and in the clubs. There's good reason, too: Phaedra's original mix is a loose, percussive houser with a classic edge, originally released in 1996 as Straylight's first release. Just watch the room react when the track's second b-line appears somewhere near the middle of the track--absolutely amazing. On the flip, DJ Buck hands in his own full mix and dub, both of which stay true to the original's faintly disco nod, replacing the relentless bass chug of the original mix with a sparser, 70s-ish funk vibe and an almost New York groove. Hard to believe it's been almost six years since "Holy Roller"'s original release, but it just goes to show: Timeless records still do exist.

PEACE DIVISION "Wherever The Drums Take Me / I've Seen You Do It" Junior [House, Tribal, Tech-house] Every time Peace Division come up with a new record that floats my boat, I've gotta say something about it. So here goes: Justin Drake and Clive Henry step back into form with this new 2-track EP for Junior. The first half, "Wherever The Drums Take Me," is vintage Peace Division--dark and dirty drums, sleazy vocal sampling, and their uncanny ability to make even the dingiest lounge feel like the biggest of rooms. Stripped down and sinister, perfect for long mixes. On the flip, the duo team up with old school NYC impresario Louie "Balo" Guzman for "I've Seen You Do It," a deeper tribal take that has gained favor with Danny Tenaglia for its chunky drum tones and slightly progressive edge. If you're missing Peace Division's earlier Low Pressings output, you're gonna want to hear this one.
